Portable storage containers — PODS, U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT, Zippy Shell, and similar services — offer a convenient hybrid between DIY moving and full-service movers. The container company delivers an empty container to your driveway, you load it, and they transport it. The loading, however, is where most people struggle. A 16-foot PODS container that is loaded incorrectly might hold only 60% of what it should, forcing you to rent a second container at significant additional cost. NEM container loading crews are trained specifically for the dimensions, weight limits, and loading strategies of portable containers. Unlike trucks that have side doors, containers have a single entry point on one end, which changes the loading approach entirely. Our crews load heavy furniture and appliances toward the back (far end) of the container, build stable stacks with proper weight distribution, fill vertical space with boxes, and leave no dead air gaps where items could shift. Fragile items are cushioned in the middle of the load, protected on all sides. All furniture is wrapped in moving blankets and the entire load is secured with ratchet straps tied to the container's built-in anchor points. The result is a container that is full, stable, and ready for transport or long-term storage.
PODS loading is priced by crew size and hours worked, similar to truck loading. A 2-person crew handles most standard loads for 7-foot and 12-foot containers. A 16-foot container with a full household may need 3 movers. Hourly rate includes all equipment and materials. You pay only for time used with a 2-hour minimum.
A 7-foot PODS holds a studio or small 1-bedroom. A 12-foot holds a 1-2 bedroom apartment. A 16-foot holds a 2-3 bedroom home. Professional loading maximizes these capacities — we often fit more than the estimated capacity by using vertical space and strategic stacking.
Yes. Pre-boxed and labeled items allow the crew to focus on strategic loading rather than packing. This significantly reduces the total time and cost.
Yes. Curbside containers are common. Our crew carries items from your home to the container. If the container is across a driveway or on the street, we work the distance.
Our crew leader will alert you if the container is nearing capacity before everything is loaded. You can then prioritize what goes in and decide whether to order a second container or leave some items behind.
Yes. If you have loaded some items already, our crew assesses what is in there, reorganizes if needed for better space usage, and continues loading the remaining items.
Do not start loading the container yourself before the crew arrives unless you are confident in your stacking technique — poor initial loading often needs to be completely redone
Ask the container company about weight limits for your specific container size and relay this to our crew so they can distribute weight appropriately
Place items you will need first (if the container is going to storage) near the container door — think seasonal clothes, holiday items, or specific boxes
Leave the container door accessible and clear before the crew arrives — they need full access to the opening with no obstacles
If your container will be stored outdoors, consider weather protection for items near the door — even sealed containers can experience slight moisture intrusion during storms
