Baltimore is a city of distinct neighborhoods connected by a street system dating back to the 18th century. The city's defining architectural feature is the rowhouse—Baltimore has more rowhouses per capita than any other American city. Baltimore rowhouses present the same narrow-doorway, steep-staircase challenges as Philadelphia and DC, but Baltimore's version often includes the unique "formstone" facade (a decorative stone-like coating) that chips easily during moves. The city's famous marble steps ("white marble stoops") are slippery when wet. Baltimore's Inner Harbor waterfront has attracted significant condo development. The city is compact—only 92 square miles—so local moves are rarely more than 20 minutes apart by distance, though traffic on I-83, I-95, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway extends travel times.
